Education at the ISSK

Students who want to aspire to full-time studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have a possibility to attend preparatory German courses in preparation for the “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” (DSH – German language test for admission to university) prior to taking up their studies. Prerequisite is an application at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and a complying admission to university as well as the passing of the entrance exam.

The length of education of the preparatory German courses at the ISSK takes one to two semesters (the exam period for the DSH, inclusively) depending on the result of the qualifying exam.

The spring term runs from February 20 to June 23, while the autumn term runs from August 28 to December 22.

The German Courses Offered

At the ISSK, German courses on the following language proficiency levels (in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR) are offered:

1.1 German course B1 à B2

1.2 German course B2 à C1

The German course B1/B2 takes one term and comprises 16 semester hours per week. It concludes with the exam on level B2.

The German course B2/C1 takes one term and consists of 16 semester hours per week as well. Admission prerequisite is the successful completion of the German course B1/B2 or the passing of the entrance exam with a result of 85% in each section. The course concludes with the DSH exam.
