In the foreign language section of the ISSK, students, doctoral candidates, postdocs, visiting scholars and employees at JGU have the opportunity to attend language courses free of charge during the semester.

Please note – The registration times of the ISSK courses differ from the registration phases of the regular JGU semester events. Please find specific dates for registration here.

Register to your language course in three steps – we look forward to seeing you!

Our language courses are divided into different levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and some have specific focuses (e.g. professional and academic English). You can find more details and the registration function in JOGU-StINe.

Depending on the language, our range of courses includes elementary (A1 and A2), independent (B1 and B2) and proficient (C1) language use. Courses are not always available in all languages and at all levels.

Further language courses are offered by Faculty 05, Faculty 06 and University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, among others.

The language courses at Mainz University of Applied Sciences may only be attended if no comparable course is available at JGU.

For JGU students, the credits earned are listed under “Additional qualifications” on the transcript of records. Students in joint or integrated degree programs and employees will be issued a certificate upon request.

Most courses are designed so that one level can be completed in one semester. Some language courses complete levels B1 and higher in two (ideally consecutive) semesters.

These courses are aimed at participants who would like to improve their language proficiency during the semester break (March or September) and comprise a total of 40 to 48 lessons. The courses offered in September can be found in Jogustine under the summer semester. The courses in March appear under the winter semester.

We offer a range of language courses with different language levels. In order for us to find the appropriate course for you, we need you to provide us with proof of your language level. There are various options to do this:

Choose an A1 course from our range in Jogustine. You do not need a certificate or a placement test for this course. We do not offer any A1 courses in English.

Access to the courses is possible for continuing students who have already attended and passed courses at the ISSK in the last two semesters. Submitting a proof or certificate is not required as we can retrieve your results at any time.

The following certificates are recognized by us:

All prospective course participants who have language proficiency in the offered spokespersons, but cannot prove this either through a recognized language certificate or through a completed course at the ISSK, must take part in our placement test. This takes place in digital form approximately one month before the beginning of the lecture period. (Dates for the placement test) This is a so-called C-test, which consists of 4 texts with gaps that you have to fill in analogously. Registration in the placement test is not necessary.

The result of the placement test shows the level of the course for which you may register in the following semester (e.g. test result A2 – registration for course A2). The result of placement test is valid for one year.

Please note the following:

  • Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
  • Registrations are first checked for the specific level. A “pending” registration is not a binding confirmation. This only takes place after examination of the participation requirements.
  • It may be possible to participate if a course place becomes available. If this possibility passes, you will be informed by the coordinator.
  • If you cannot or do not wish to attend the course you have chosen, please contact the coordination by e-mail.
  • Multiple registrations for the same language are not permitted in most cases and will result in the deletion of all course registrations (e.g. French A1 and French A2 may not be attended at the same time). In English, you may take some courses at the same time (see respective course descriptions). The grammar course in Spanish can also be combined with another general course.
  • Of course, you can attend courses in different spokespersons at the same time (e.g. Spanish A1 and French A1).
  • You can repeat a language course that you have not passed.
  • You can repeat a course you have already attended and passed, provided there are places available. Please contact the coordinator.
  • It is not possible to acquire further ECTS credits for a course that has already been attended and passed.
