You have completed your secondary education in a country other than Germany. If your school-leaving certificate only qualifies as indirect higher education entrance qualification in Germany, you must first pass the assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) before beginning to study at the university. To prepare for the assessment test, ISSK offers preparatory courses, the so-called focus courses. Passing the assessment test will entitle you to enroll for a program of study at a university or any other higher education institution in Germany.
Which focus course to apply for, depends mainly on the program of study you would like to take up at the university. At JGU, all programs of study are assigned to a focus course. Please inquire which focus course you need for a specific program of study before submitting an application. Also please make sure that your school-leaving certificate does allow the field of study.
Overview focus courses
All applications at JGU are being handled centrally by the Office of Applications and Admissions. The application process for the preparatory college is conducted in a total of three steps. If you have any questions regarding application and admission, please contact International Admissions .
You will receive all official notifications regarding your application electronically via your applicant account. Further information on the application process and enrollment at JGU can be found here:
Our focus courses are held in Mainz over the course of one semester. Designed as preparation for a program of study in Germany, we place particular emphasis on the competence of independent learning. Each focus course therefore also includes extended self-study. Online courses have been developed to support the concept and are available via the online JGU Moodle learning platform.
The subjects in the assessment test depend on the focus course chosen.
Subjects of the assessment test
Focus course | Subjects of the assessment test |
---|---|
S-/G-course | German Social Studies History + Fundamentals of the Humanities |
M course | German Mathematics + Physics Biology + Chemistry |
T-course | German Physics + Chemistry Mathematics – Computer Science |
W course | German Economics Mathematics + Social Studies |
The examination regulations for the entrance examination and the assessment test can be found here.
Exemption from the examination in German is generally possible. The exact conditions can be found in § 16 of the examination regulations.
The examinations take place at the end of our semester. After passing the assessment test, you can begin a program of study in Germany. The chosen program of study must match the focus of the completed assessment test.
Have you already passed the assessment test, but the focus of your assessment test does not match your current desired subject? In this case you may take a supplementary exam in the appropriate specialization.
